Disability Discrimination

Since the introduction of the DDA act in October 1996, and now since October 2004, the legislation is in place to make the Act enforceable, guidelines within the Approved Document M (ADM) BS 7953 and BS8300 give clear advice to manufacturers, building managers, and end users, as to the ways in which entrance matting could be designed into the entrance areas of buildings and provide a barrier free facility for the Disabled.

Excerpts of the ADM can be seen at: Approved Document M 'Access to and use of buildings'

Look specifically at Provision 2.7, item h & i, of above.

"internal floor surfaces adjacent to the threshold are of materials that do not impede the movement of wheelchairs eg. not coir matting, and changes in floor material do not create a potencial trip hazard"

"where mats wells are provided, the surface of the mat is level with the adjacent floor finish"

Making Entrance mats comply to the DDA is NOT a definitively prescriptive process, however Emco and all their technical staff take the matter very seriously, all documentation, references and standards which are applicable, and are able to offer sound professional advice based on real time case studies as to the right specification of matting in every case.
