EMCO help welcome IKEA to Ireland
Leading entrance matting manufacturer, EMCO, have recently completed installing one of their systems at the first IKEA store to open on the island of Ireland. The new store, located in Belfast adjacent to the George Best Belfast City Airport, required a robust entrance matting system which would withstand a high volume of foot and trolley traffic. A further requirement was to prevent the spread of moisture and dirt into the store, whilst complementing the striking aesthetic appeal of the building.
EMCO rose to the challenge and provided a combination of rubber and hardwearing tufted carpet strips within their heavy duty Marschall 517 S/RG aluminium profile, which proved to be the perfect solution. This extremely durable roll-up entrance matting is designed to withstand vehicular traffic, and utilizes a rigid aluminium chassis with underlaid impact sound installation. This was fitted with moisture removing coarse fibre carpet strips, in an anthracite colour.
The project was managed & installed by EMCO’s Irish distributors, Flooring Providers Ltd, who worked closely with the construction managers, pcm, to ensure the job was completed to the highest standard to meet the store’s opening deadline.
Emco is the world’s largest market leader in the manufacture and supply of entrance matting systems, including a wide range of customised and standard matting for both commercial and residential applications. As a European company with the UK office and production facility based in Shropshire, EMCO prides itself on its satisfied customer base, having supplied and installed over 100,000 sq metres of matting worldwide in 2006. EMCO is now the biggest, unrivalled supplier of entrance matting in the world.

Irish Double for Emco
Leading entrance matting manufacturer, EMCO has supplied mats from its Diplomat range for two major chain store outlets in Ireland. The entrances to both stores required a hardwearing and efficient matting system to act as a barrier against dirt, grit and moisture. The Diplomat system is constructed of coarse fibre strips, which are mounted on aluminium profile carriers. This enables harmful grit particles to drop between the strips into a well below. The mat can be rolled to facilitate easy cleaning.
Both in Dublin, the Tallaght store in The Square has recently opened whilst the established Liffey Valley store at Lucan has undergone a refurbishment. The EMCO matting in Anthracite colour was recommended by the individual flooring contractors, PFK Flooring and Floorform Ireland, who had previously installed the system in other applications.
Emco is the world’s market leader in the manufacture and supply of entrance matting systems, including a wide range of customized and standard matting for both commercial and residential applications. As a European company with a UK office and production facility based in Shropshire, Emco prides itself on its satisfied customer base, having supplied and installed over 100,000 square metres of matting worldwide in 2006. Makes a Splash at Champney's Forest Mere Pool
Guests
at Champney’s Forest Mere health resort expect exceptional
standards - so when the pool area was upgraded, Emco swimming
pool gratings were the natural choice.
Located in 150
acres of grounds in rural Hampshire, Champney’s Forest

suits even the most unusual of pool shapes. Available in
rigid and roll-up form, parallel and crossways, the grating
can be supplied in numerous sizes and corner solutions.
With four standard colours plus RAL specials on offer, Emco
grating gives designers freedom to realise their most creative
spa and pool concepts.
On a practical
level, the gratings allow free flow of splash water, are
gentle on the feet and perfectly hygienic. They are also
designed to stay looking good over long periods of time.
All designs are UV, chlorine, sea and spa-water resistant
and their high quality material and design ensures strong,
stable performance.

Emco
makes theatrical entrance
Entrance
matting specialists, Emco, have provided a unique matting
system for a new theatre complex in Llandudno. The contemporary
design of the North Wales Theatre & Conference Centre,
Venue Cymru, includes two entrances off the seafront promenade,
comprising of both exterior and interior matting areas.
Architects, SMC Hickton Madeley were keen to extend the
striking design concept of the building and it’s interior,
to the entrance matting. Crucial in complementing the interior
and exterior scheme was an entrance that enhanced rather
than clashed. Intrinsic to the design of entrance matting
was the desire to have a black coloured finish, which proved
to be difficult to source. Emco’s bespoke design service
were able to provide the perfect solution by anodising all
the natural aluminium profiles in a black finish.
Exterior wells of the Emco
Diplomat system were fitted with black rubber inserts to
provide removal of harmful grit and dirt particles in all
weather conditions. The secondary interior dirt barrier
was fitted with anthracite coloured hard wearing tufted
carpet to continue the theme. This system provides optimum
clean off and reduction in footbourne moisture levels, aiding
in the reduction of slips and trips, whilst keeping cleaning
and maintenance to a minimum yet sustaining a high quality
finish. The 103 sqm system now provides a stunning entrance
to the theatre complex.

Emco
prevent an A&E
Following
the success of the installation at St. John’s Hospital,
Livingston and acknowledged benefits by the Health &
Safety Executive at a meeting earlier in 2007, Emco, the
innovative entrance matting specialists, were specified
as the suppliers for the new matting system at Monklands
Hospital, Airdrie. Completed in May 2007, the main criteria
were to ensure that the system achieved the maximum levels
of moisture and dirt removal, with the overall goal to minimise
the possibility of slips and trips and to STOP dirt and
moisture entering the hospital.
The HSE states ‘”as
supplied” products do not take into account degradation,
wear, maintenance and use…’ Emco addresses these
factors offering tailor made entrance systems using its
practical and stylish matting. These matting systems are
not only hardwearing – with some ranges withstanding
vehicular traffic, they are also easy to clean and maintain.
Two variants were specified from the Marschall 517 range
for the Monklands Hospital project, which were strategically
arranged throughout the vast entrance foyer of the hospital,
to maximise the cleaning effect. Thus adhering to the HSE
guidelines that, ‘…the position of matting should
coincide with the way pedestrians actually use the entrance.
The positions and dimensions should prevent short-cut routes
that avoid the matting.’ (www.hse.gov.uk/slips)
The primary area comprises
of matting equipped with Marschall 517/CBR, which consists
of parallel strips of nylon bristle bundles offering a first
line of defence that allows for a more aggressive and effective
removal of dirt and foreign particles. The remainder of
the foyer was finished in Marschall 517/R, a hard wearing
coarse fibre inlay which would ensure any remaining foot
bourne moisture and fine dirt particles are removed prior
to entry into the newly refurbished reception area.
As a HSE recommended prevention
for slips and trips, entrance matting is also a practical
and cost effective solution.
Due to the success of the aforementioned
installation, from November 1st; the Maintenance Services
Manager of Monklands Hospital, Mr David Craig, has received
funding approval for the remaining 11 entrances to be installed
with Emco matting systems.
Emco is the world’s
market leader in the manufacture and supply of entrance
matting systems, including a wide range of customised and
standard matting for both commercial and residential applications.
As a European company with a UK office and production facility
based in Shropshire, Emco prides itself on its satisfied
customer base, having supplied and installed over 100, 000

Emco
elected for Scottish Executive
Prolific
entrance matting specialists EMCO UK have installed a matting
system at the Scottish Executive offices, in Edinburgh.
The delegated government for Scotland, established in 1999,
is responsible for the day-to-day concerns and issues relating
to the people of Scotland. The building needed a matting
system that would work efficiently at the entrance, reducing
maintenance and hazards and improving the general aesthetics
of the foyer.
The existing matting proved
a jeopardy to general health and safety due to undulations
in the surface of the mat and ineffective moisture removal,
thus causing slip and trip hazards both on and beyond the
matting system. Appointed by contractors, Gordon & Haliday
Flooring, in association with Dalkia ETS, the EMCO system
needed to resolve these problems, with moisture absorption
being a key part of the criteria. The extremely heavy-duty
matting was selected from EMCO’s Marschall range,
suitable for areas with high-density pedestrian traffic.
The recessed, weather resistant matting ensures that the
tread surface is both safe and efficient. The coarse fibres
of the Marschall carpet matting are slip resistant, removing
both moisture and dirt particles en route.
EMCO manufacture a wide range
of customised and standard entrance matting systems to meet
the demands of any housing or commercial application.

Emco
provides an Emergency Service
In
July 2006, innovational entrance matting specialists EMCO
UK provided St. John’s Hospital in Livingston, with
a radical new look to its exterior and interior matting.
The specification was to provide a matting system that would
prevent damage to the safety flooring beyond the entrance
into the hospital, adhere to the NHS Health and Safety initiative
of combating slips, trips and falls and create an entrance
area that was distinguished from the hospital flooring throughout.
After months of
planning and an 18-month trial on a smaller entrance area,
the hospital’s Estates Manager, Bill Mooney was satisfied
that the system could significantly reduce the level of
contamination in the hospital corridors. The EMCO 3 zone
matting system was then specified; as the latest development
from EMCO UK it creates 3 distinct areas using 3 different
types of matting creating an innovative entrance to the
hospital.
The 3-zone matting
system comprises of EMCO Marschall matting in the exterior
and intermediate areas and EMCO Attaché TT within
the foyer of the hospital. The Marschall 542S has a load
bearing capacity of 2000kgs/100cm2, far in excess of the
load of a laden ambulance vehicle, thus ideal for the hospital
entrance. Alternating rubber and nylon brush strips and
a newly developed stainless steel inverted ‘omega’
section strip, act as both a drain gully and brush off for
coarse dirt. The intermediate section is inlaid with a tufted
carpet strip, which removes excess moisture and finer dirt
particles. Finally, in the ‘clean off’ zone
a hybrid of polymide/nylon yarn carpet acts as a final brush
off area. This material not only collects potentially contaminating
particles, ‘…but the texture of the matting
also makes it safer for people and cuts down on slips, trips
and falls.’
Bill Mooney has
said that since going live in November 2006 the Barrier
Matting systems performance in the first few months of winter
has been very encouraging. The system will be monitored
regularly this year and a performance case study will be
submitted to the Health Facilities Scotland Flooring Group.
EMCO manufacture
a wide range of customised and standard entrance matting
systems to meet the demands of any housing or commercial
application.

Emco
do nothing by halves at the Victoria Quarter
Leading
the way in innovative entrance matting, Emco have supplied
yet another successful system, this time at the Victoria
Quarter in Leeds. Known as the ‘Knightsbridge of the
North’ the Grade 2 listed shopping centre was in need
of a new matting system, that would address both Health
& Safety guidelines on reducing slips or trips, whilst
at the same time, establishing and asserting the centre’s
stylish corporate image.
Housing the likes of Vivienne
Westwood, Paul Smith, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Harvey Nichols,
the Victoria Quarter has a high-class profile that needed
to be adhered to and reflected throughout the building.
The existing matting was in poor quality and failing to
achieve adequate removal of footborne dirt and moisture.
Emco were tasked to provide a solution that went above and
beyond dealing with these practical matters, as the client
also wanted to incorporate the VQ logo into the matting,
expressing the prestige and identity of the centre.
Entrances to the shopping centre
are open 24hours a day and are subject to all weather conditions.
Restricted by the Grade 2 listing, Emco were not allowed
to extend the existing short walk off area, therefore they
had to maximise the performance of the matting system. Emco
used a combination of rubber and carpeted matting, from
it’s Marschall brand, to achieve maximum clean off
and lessen moisture levels, thus reducing the prominent
issue of slips and trips within the retail sector. The heavy
duty rubber matting was used in the first 600mm of the entrance,
where a durable, weatherproof, hardwearing surface is required.
The remainder of the matting area was finished in a complementary
coarse fibre carpet. A main stipulation of the brief was
to adopt a brass colour within the matting system to be
in keeping with the traditional Victorian architecture.
Inserting the grey VQ logo, Emco used brass anodised aluminium
profiles within both the rubber and carpeted sections. Ultimately
Emco were able to install a system that was practical yet
stylish, achieving all aspects of the detailed and demanding
brief.
Emco is the world’s
market leader in the manufacture and supply of entrance
matting systems, including a wide range of customised and
standard matting for both commercial and residential applications.
As a European company with a UK office and production facility
based in Shropshire, Emco pride itself on its satisfied
customer base, having supplied and installed over 100,000
sq metres of matting worldwide in 2006. Emco is now the
biggest, unrivalled supplier of entrance matting in the
world.

Emco
UK Dives in with a Grate Service
Emco
UK have supplied Sir Charles Parson School in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
with overflow grating for their new indoor hydrotherapy
and swimming pool. As a school for children with severe
and multiple learning difficulties, Sir Charles Parson's
required a surface that was easy to maintain, would not
act as a haven for bacteria, or cause obstruction when dealing
with the children's access in and out of the pool.
Emco UK secured the contract
with P F Burridge & sons Ltd, (Principal Contractor)
due to the exceptional performance characteristics of their
products and their ability to supply and complete the bespoke
system well within a short lead-time. The cost effective
grating system is not only slip resistant but, unlike other
products, it is malleable and can be rolled up allowing
easy maintenance and cleaning. Constructed from hard, durable
PVC that can withstand high impact, the solid profile of
the grating deters the harbouring of bacteria. The Emco
system also features unique, rigid mitred corners, which
avoid the necessity to join corners on site. The project
also required the maximum 500mm width gratings which Emco
were able to supply without a centre support to facilitate
increased drainage capacity. The system is available in
yellow, white, beige and the grey, which was chosen for
Sir Charles Parson School.
Emco are well
known in the UK for their entrance matting systems but they
have also been manufacturing a wide range of overflow gratings,
cover gratings, hygiene matting and accessories for swimming
pools for more than 20 years.

Emco
departs and arrives at Manchester Airport
Innovative
entrance matting designers and manufacturers, Emco, have
recently completed an installation at Manchester Airport.
Contractors, Gariff Construction, appointed Emco for their
ability to work successfully alongside both their own, and
the airport's management teams. Due to the large amounts
of pedestrian traffic passing through the airport at all
times of the year, timing was paramount to keep disruption
to a minimum. 120sq/m of Emco's Marschall matting was laid
in all entrance areas, both arrivals and departures, in
four separate sessions over a four-month period, between
November 2005 and March 2006, to avoid peak summer holiday
travel.
Marschall 522
S/R is an extremely hardwearing roll up entrance matting,
designed to withstand vehicular traffic. Emco installed
a rigid, aluminium chassis, underlaid with impact sound
insulation. This was then fitted with a tread surface of
recessed, durable weather resistant coarse fibres, with
an anthracite rib colour. The Marschall range consists of
systems for all seasons, suited to areas of heavy traffic.
As part of a partnering
scheme, Emco was also responsible for supplying the recently
developed Doncaster Robin Hood Airport with its entrance
matting system. A similar system has also been installed
at Luton Airport.

A Matter of Retail
Therapy for Emco
The
Piazza Shopping Centre in Paisley, Glasgow, have employed
avant-garde entrance matting professionals Emco UK, to solve
its hazardous matting system. The existing entrance matting
caused no end of problems with both maintenance issues and
people slipping and tripping. Emco UK resolved these issues
by installing two open construction matting systems.
Unrivalled Emco
UK secured the contract with the shopping centre after Maureen
Hill, the Centre Manager, carried out extensive research
into the entrance matting market. She wanted to ensure that
she was getting best value for money and that the product
was correct for a shopping centre environment. She found
that Emco were not only the most cost effective but also
provided an outstanding service, from the point of contact
through to installation.
A combination
of two Emco Marschall matting systems was installed to provide
a uniform appearance to the entrance. In the first section,
where traffic is concentrated and high levels of dirt are
distributed, an extremely hardwearing roll-up matting with
a dual fibre rib/cassette brush application was installed.
This sits in a rigid aluminium chassis and has recessed,
durable, weather resistant properties. The second section
was inlaid with the same dual fibre carpet strips, designed
to remove any remaining dirt particles.

Emco makes an entrance
at new Birmingham landmark
Leading
entrance matting manufacturer, Emco has supplied and installed
a mat from its Diplomat range in Birmingham’s newest
landmark building. The first 18 storeys of the 40 storey
Beetham Tower contains a 211 bedroom Radisson SAS Hotel.
The foyer of the hotel has access onto the busy Holloway
Circus and required an efficient entrance matting system
to act as a barrier against dirt, grit and moisture. The
Diplomat system is constructed of coarse fibre strips which
are mounted on Aluminium profile carriers. Gaps between
the strips enable harmful grit particles to drop into a
well below which can be easily cleaned.
The entrance to
the Radisson SAS hotel included revolving and conventional
glass doors and extended to an area of 15 square metres.
Emco provided a complete customised package from manufacture
through to installation of the Diplomat system.
A similar installation
has also been specified for the new Radisson SAS hotel on
Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile.

Entrance
matting solution for listed building
Entrance
matting specialists, Emco, have installed a bespoke entrance
system at Devon County Council’s principle civic building.
County Hall is a Grade Two Star listed building in Exeter,
which required an entrance matting system to act as a dirt
barrier and also cope with the variations in floor depths.
The existing coir matting had become a potential hazard
to the less able and did not meet the requirements of the
Disability Discrimination Act.
Further
to a site visit, Emco recommended and installed a bespoke
system consisting of six diplomat mats of varying depths.
Aluminium profile carriers were fitted with coarse black
fibre strips to contrast with the surrounding grey carpet
and enable the partially sighted to distinguish between
the two surfaces. The carriers were installed at 3mm gaps
to enable grit particles to fall into a well below for easy
cleaning. The narrower than normal gap also prevents heels
of shoes being trapped and provides a more even surface
for wheelchairs and mobility aids. The complete installation
took place over one weekend to prevent disruption during
normal working hours.
